Frequently Asked Questions

How much practice do I need before my road test?

ICBC recommends a minimum of 60 hours of behind-the-wheel practice during the Learner (L) stage. Pairing professional lessons from Banur Driving School with consistent practice under a qualified supervisor builds the muscle memory and confidence needed to pass your test on the first try.

Parent Tip: Not sure how to coach your teen? Ask our instructors for a "Supervisor Guide" to help you provide the best support from the passenger seat.

What is the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP)?

The GLP is BC’s three-stage process designed to turn new drivers into safe experts:

  • Class 7L (Learner): Earned at age 16+ via a knowledge test. Must drive with a supervisor.
  • Class 7N (Novice): Earned after 12 months of safe driving and a road test.
  • Class 5 (Full License): Earned after 24 months of safe driving and a final road test.

The Banur Advantage: If you complete our ICBC-approved GLP course, you can reduce your "N" stage by 6 months and earn two High School credits!

How do I choose the right driving school?

Beyond being ICBC-licensed, a great school should offer:

  • Safety Over Shortcuts: We don’t just teach you to memorize test routes; we teach you how to think independently and handle real-world hazards.
  • Instructor Matching: You should be able to request an instructor whose teaching style fits your personality.
  • Detailed Progress Reports: Our instructors provide feedback after every session so you and your supervisor know exactly what to practice.
  • Flexibility: We work around your school and work schedules.

When should I start my lessons?

  • Beginners: We recommend 2–3 lessons immediately after getting your L to build a solid foundation and avoid developing "bad habits" early on.
  • Intermediate: Regular check-ins throughout your training year ensure you're staying on track.
  • Pre-Test: A "Brush-up" lesson 1–2 weeks before your road test is highly recommended to fine-tune your skills.

What are the benefits of classroom training?

Driving is more than just steering. Our classroom sessions cover the "What Ifs"—like tire blowouts, hydroplaning, and complex right-of-way rules—that you may not encounter during your on-road hours. It’s a safe space to ask questions and build the theoretical knowledge required for the ICBC road test.
