Understanding Senior Drivers' Assessments in BC
People often search for a BC seniors driving test or a drivers test for seniors when they want to understand the requirements for older drivers.
In British Columbia, these requirements are not all the same. A medical examination, a driving lesson, and an Enhanced Road Assessment (ERA) serve different purposes.
Is There a Driving Test for Seniors in BC?
There is no automatic road test solely because a driver reaches a particular age. RoadSafetyBC requires drivers to complete a Driver's Medical Examination Report at age 80, age 85, and every two years thereafter. This is a medical examination, not a road test.
RoadSafetyBC may also refer a driver for an Enhanced Road Assessment when further evaluation of their ability to drive safely is needed. An ERA referral is based on driving fitness concerns, not age.
What Is an Enhanced Road Assessment (ERA)?
An Enhanced Road Assessment is an on-road assessment conducted by ICBC on behalf of RoadSafetyBC for certain Class 5 and Class 7 drivers referred for evaluation.
The appointment takes approximately 90 minutes and includes:
- Pre-trip vehicle orientation: Become familiar with the vehicle's controls and complete the initial checks.
- On-road assessment: Complete a drive of approximately 45 minutes, including everyday driving tasks and a feedback component.
- Post-trip review: Discuss the assessment and the examiner's observations.
An ERA is not a pass-or-fail test. RoadSafetyBC considers the assessment results and other relevant information when making licensing decisions.
