Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get started with my training?
The path depends on which class of license you are aiming for:
- Class 2 & 3: Most students start with our Air Brake course. Once finished, you’ll head to ICBC to write your Air Brake knowledge and Learner’s exams at the same time.
- Class 1 (MELT): You must pass the ICBC Class 1 Knowledge Test (which includes air brake questions) before you can be accepted into the mandatory MELT program.
Pro Tip: ICBC appointments are often booked weeks in advance. Schedule your knowledge test at icbc.com or call 1-800-950-1498 as soon as you start studying!
Do I have to take the MELT program for Class 1?
Yes. As of October 2021, the 140-hour Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) is a legal requirement in BC before you can attempt a Class 1 road test.
Are there exceptions? Only if you hold a valid Class 1 license from another Canadian province with at least 24 months of experience in the last three years. If you're coming from Alberta or Ontario, BC typically recognizes their MELT programs, but you may still need to provide specific documentation or complete a BC Air Brake Pre-trip.
How do I choose the right driving school?
Beyond the basic ICBC licensing, look for a school that offers:
- Independence, Not Just Memorization: Look for a school that coaches you to make safe decisions rather than just telling you where to turn on a specific test route.
- Instructor Variety: You should be able to request an instructor that matches your learning style and have the option to switch if it's not a fit.
- Detailed Progress Reports: Your instructor should give you a written summary after every lesson so you know exactly what to practice.
- Modern Equipment: Ensure you’re training on the same types of vehicles (like Kenworth or Peterbilt units) that you’ll actually use in the industry.
How many lessons will I need?
It varies. Driving a commercial vehicle is a massive responsibility. While we have set programs, we often recommend an initial assessment lesson. This allows an instructor to see your natural skills and recommend a program—whether it's a full course or just a few "polish-up" sessions.
Is there funding or financing available for truck training?
Yes! Commercial training is an investment in your future, and we offer several ways to manage the cost:
- Interest-Free Installments: Pay a deposit to start and clear the balance as you train.
- Government Grants: You may be eligible for the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant (up to $3,500) or funding through WorkBC, WorkSafeBC, or Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training (ISET).
- Employer Sponsorship: Many trucking companies are so eager for drivers that they will pay for your training in exchange for a work commitment.
- Peace of Mind Refund: If you pre-pay for a package but finish early, we only charge for the training you used and refund the rest.
Will I find a job as a new driver?
Absolutely. The industry is facing a significant driver shortage. Our graduates get exclusive access to our internal job board where top-tier carriers specifically look for Banur-trained drivers. Many students even have job offers before they finish their road test!
What are the ICBC fees?
While our tuition covers the training and vehicle use, you’ll need to pay ICBC directly for your licensing:
- Knowledge Tests: ~$15 per attempt.
- Class 1 Road Test: ~$60.
- Class 2/3 Road Test: ~$50.
- Medical Exam Processing: ~$28 (plus whatever your doctor charges for the physical, usually $100–$150).
